MODELLING
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

Lights. Camera. Action! You watch Fashion TV; flip through the pages of Vogue, Elle and Flare. The fast-paced, high-energy world of modelling is something you’ve dreamed about for as long as you can remember.  You’re ready to make the jump, but you’re not sure exactly how to do it. Not to worry. Here is everything you need to know before you walk through the door of Specs Model Management.

Is there an age requirement for becoming a model?

Yes.  A person’s body has to be fully developed before we consider them. This means that we don’t take anyone under the age of 15. Female models need to be between the ages of 15 and 21.  For men, it’s between 19 and 26.

What kind of body-type are you looking for?

You don’t have to fit into a mould to become a model. Beauty is a very unique quality; we are looking for men and women who can make an impression. But there are a few prerequisites. Healthy teeth and skin are a must.  Height and body proportions are also extremely important. Female models need to stand between 5’8’’ and 5’11“ tall. You have to have a  33 - 34 inch bust, a 24 - 26 inch waist and hips that measure between 34 - 36 inches. We look at male models that stand between 6’ and 6’2”. Your jacket measurement is between 40 - 42 inches, your waist between 32 - 33 and you have an inseam that measures 33 - 34 inches.

I fit that description. How do I arrange to meet with you?

We love to meet new faces!!  Our agency has open casting calls so that we can take the time to see you. You don’t need an appointment. Just drop by our offices at 3981 St-Laurent, Suite 710 on Thursdays, between 3pm and 5pm.  We’d be happy to sit down with you.

What should I bring with me when I come to an open casting call?

Just be comfortable, we want to see who you are!  Don’t wear any make-up and keep your hair as natural as possible. Consider what you wear carefully.  We need to see what your body looks like.  This means that bulky fisherman’s sweaters and sweatpants are not an option!  Make sure to bring along a couple of snap-shots of yourself (they don’t necessarily have to be professionally taken).  This will help us to evaluate what you look like on film.

What happens if you like what you see?

We will send you on a test shoot with a professional photographer.  Specs will suggest a list of experienced fashion photographers that we often work with. The photographer will then hire a stylist, and the hair and make up artist for the shoot.

How much does the test shoot cost?

A test shoot costs between $175.00 and $450.00.  This money will be coming out of your pocket so make sure to budget for it!

What happens when the test shoot is finished?

We will sit down with you to evaluate the results of the shoot.  If we feel that you have a look that is marketable, we will put your first composite card together with photos from your test shoot.  This will be the “calling card” we will use to present you to potential clients.

What type of work can I look forward to?

There is a whole range of possibilities including editorial and catalogue shoots, advertising and television commercials. Some of our biggest clients include Elita lingerie, La Senza, Hollywood Jeans, Elle Quebec, Marriage Quebec and Clin D’Oeil  magazine.

Specs has an editorial division and a runway division - where do I fit in?

This is a decision that we’ll make for you.  It will all depend on how we decide to market your image.  Some of our models work in both divisions; others are exclusive to a single department. For the runway division, you have to be a minimum of 5’9”.

If I’m a professional model and I’m really interested in working with you, should I go to the open casting call?

If you have worked in the industry and already have a portfolio, you don’t need to come to the open call.  Simply call our offices at (514) 844-1352 and make an appointment.  We’d be happy to talk with you!
